Garage Doors, Insulation, Power and Storage: Planning a New Garage

Garage door sizes for trucks, insulation and R-value, EV chargers, workshop subpanels, mini splits, windows and lifts, with HomeGuide figures. (678) 661-6646.

The best time to plan a garage's doors, power and storage is before the walls go up. Changing a door opening or running a new circuit through finished drywall costs far more than doing it during the build.

Every dollar figure on this page is a national figure published by HomeGuide, not a quote from us. HomeGuide publishes no garage prices for Georgia or for Griffin, and the clay, slope, drive length and finish on your lot all move the real number. Figures read on homeguide.com in October 2026.

What size garage door do I need for a pickup truck?

For a full-size pickup or a lifted truck, plan an 8-foot-tall door instead of the common 7-foot height, and at least a 9-foot-wide single door or a 16-foot double. Measure the truck with mirrors, racks and any roof gear. HomeGuide puts a single door at $700 to $2,700 installed and a double at $1,000 to $3,500, and taller doors need taller walls, which adds to the framing price.

Should I insulate my garage, and what R-value should I use?

Insulate the garage if you will heat or cool it, work in it or put a room above it. In Georgia's climate, the roof or ceiling is where insulation does the most, because the summer sun bakes it; walls and the door come next. The right R-value depends on whether the space is conditioned, and the energy code sets it for conditioned rooms. HomeGuide puts garage insulation at $0.50 to $3.00 per square foot, or $800 to $5,100 for walls and ceiling in a two-car garage. An insulated two-car door runs $1,500 to $3,700 or more.

How much does it cost to add an EV charger in a new garage?

HomeGuide puts a Level 2 EV charger with installation at $1,200 to $3,000. It gives no separate figure for a charger inside a garage versus outdoors. In a new garage, running a 240-volt circuit to the right wall during the build is the cheap part; adding it later means opening walls or running conduit outside them.

How much electrical power does a workshop garage need?

A workshop garage often needs its own subpanel, sized for the tools you run at the same time. HomeGuide's subpanel page lists a 100 to 125 amp subpanel at $500 to $1,500 and a 200 amp one at $800 to $2,000. Running power to a detached garage costs $10 to $25 per linear foot, so a garage far from the house pays more for the line itself. Plan dedicated circuits for a compressor, welder or table saw.

Can I heat and cool a garage with a mini split?

Yes. A ductless mini split heats and cools a garage without ductwork, and it is the usual choice for a garage gym, office or shop in Georgia. HomeGuide's garage conversion page puts one zone at $2,500 to $6,000. For heat only, a garage heater runs $400 to $2,000 installed. A mini split only pays off if the walls, ceiling and door are insulated.

Should a garage have windows and a side door?

A side door is worth it on almost every garage, so you can walk in without opening the big door. Windows add light and air, which matters in a workshop. HomeGuide's detached garage page puts windows at $450 to $1,500 and an exterior door at $300 to $1,000 for a two-car garage. In HOA neighborhoods, window style often has to match the house.

What should I plan for storage, lifts and lofts?

Decide on storage and lifts before framing, because both depend on ceiling height and roof framing. A car lift needs a high ceiling and a thick enough slab under its posts; HomeGuide puts a car lift at $2,500 to $5,500. A storage loft or attic needs trusses designed to carry the load. HomeGuide's outbuilding page says a second story or loft for storage adds $10,000 to $30,000.

How much does a garage door opener cost?

HomeGuide puts a garage door opener at $300 to $900 installed, with a national average of $600. Belt drives run quieter than chain drives, which matters if a bedroom sits over or next to the garage.

Is an epoxy floor worth it?

An epoxy or similar coating makes a garage floor easier to clean and hides stains from red clay tracked in on tires. HomeGuide's garage conversion page puts epoxy at $4 to $10 per square foot. The slab must be fully cured and dry before any coating goes down.
